Lake Shadows Meadow

Our Influences and Foundations

Lake Shadows Meadow is shaped by thoughtful research, proven design models, and a deep belief in intentional community. Our vision draws from nationally recognized leaders in pocket neighborhood design and the co-housing movement — adapted to fit the land, the town, and the people of Palmer Lake.

Inspired by Pocket Neighborhood Design

Our earliest inspiration came from the work of Ross Chapin, whose Pocket Neighborhood designs center homes around shared common spaces that naturally encourage interaction and cooperation.

These homes are intentionally designed with smaller footprints than typical contemporary builds — offering beauty, efficiency, and privacy while fostering a sense of belonging. By orienting homes toward shared greens rather than streets, neighbors connect more easily and community forms more organically.

Grounded in Co-housing Principles

As our planning evolved, we connected with Cohousing Association of the United States to deepen our understanding of cohousing models.

Cohousing is an intentional, collaborative neighborhood design approach that combines private homes with shared indoor and outdoor spaces. It is not a legal or financial structure — but rather a philosophy of participation, where residents help shape the community’s design, culture, and governance.

Lake Shadows Meadow integrates these principles through:

  • Thoughtfully designed common spaces

  • Opportunities for shared meals and gatherings

  • Resident participation in shaping how the community lives and evolves

Our Approach at Lake Shadows Meadow

Unlike many cohousing communities that form before land is secured, Lake Shadows Meadow began with land ownership, a professional team, and active design and approval processes already underway.

This foundation allows us to move forward with clarity — while still creating meaningful opportunities to incorporate cohousing principles into how the community is built, lived in, and stewarded over time.

Our process is structured — but still collaborative. Designed — yet evolving.
